Social Security is changing how you access their online services and they are announcing it via email. This is one email you should not ignore. The Social Security Administration government website SSA.gov is making changes to the way you can access your account at SSA.gov. (Full press release with details here.) Problem is, we have been trained to be suspicious of emails asking us to log into a website, right? So, it's possible that many will dismiss this email as being some sort of scam. But it is not. If you're used to logging in to your SSA.gov account with a simple username and password, you will need to convert your login to use the login.gov service. And they've made it pretty simple: just log in to your account with the traditional username and password and the website will walk you through creating a login.gov login for the site. (One alternative: if you've already registered for an ID.me account, you can use that as well.)
Access to your account at SSA.gov is extremely important as you consider enrolling in Medicare. Remember, the Social Security Adminstration is the gatekeeper for Medicare. SSA determines if you're Medicare eligible, processes your application to enroll in Medicare and determines your income related monthly adjustment amount if applicable. So, having access to your account at SSA.gov is a must to manage your Medicare enrollment online. Need help with this? I'm just a phone call away!
